Grip Agency presented us with the final voice recording and the character illustrations by the hip Lobster Studio, even a few finished background character animations. The script in a nutshell: “Mouse Girl”, as we called her, was to emerge from the crowd and speak up close into the camera while the people in the background disperse.

At first glance, the flat storyboard and the disappearing background characters seemed to offer an easy way out. But hey, we’re not ones to settle. We want expressive poses, immersive staging, bonus gags… And by all means, keep the party going! Why would folks be leaving; is Mouse Girl too smelly? – Let’s make this fun!

Our first move? Crafting an animatic to map out the layout and animation. To keep things exciting and visually involving, we tossed elements into 3D space, had the camera follow the action, and played with focal lengths. Equally important: Bringing the character to life. In addition to the mannerisms, we came up with the suggestion of Mouse Girl humorously acting out the “horror” of apartment hunting with a zombie walk. To add some charm and hit the message home, we had her lift her shades when delivering that punchline.

We loved how the design looked from afar, but for close-ups, it needed a bit of tweaking. We dialled those bold black lines back and sprinkled in subtle shadows, giving the characters a sculpted, luminous vibe, making sure every hand gesture would read effortlessly. To add expressiveness, we gave Mouse Girl a couple of eyebrows with extra flair. All this while keeping true to the character’s original illustration.

DubDub Studios created the perfect playful acoustic atmosphere for the spot. We love how this turned out, in a very short amount of time!
