EXPLAINER MOVIE

DATE October 2024

Trevor Jansen of Staggering Media contacted us for the creation of an explainer movie outlining the services and processes of the Reducing Poverty through Early Intervention and Occupational Rehabilitation Initiative. Trevor provided a completed voiceover script and recording, but kindly delegated the visual concept and animation to our expertise. We were grateful for the opportunity and did not want to disappoint their confidence in our abilities!

With the script already in place, we started our process with an animatic. Rough but complete, it should communicate all ideas clearly.

For the development of the visual concept, we asked ourselves specific questions.

For instance, how we can easily show people encountering difficulties without being specific about their injuries or struggles? To avoid such identifying details and convey a more universal meaning, we introduced the concept of the disembodied heads.

Furthermore: How do we show people being out of sorts, socially segregated and unable to work? To show that displacement, we decided on an up-down, light-dark world. Although the connotations are never spoken, this concept is in line with the terms “falling ill”, “falling through the cracks”, “hitting rock bottom”, “drowning in problems”, “being in a dark place” etc. The RPI program then becomes an air bubble, helps attracting more such bubbles and lifts the individuals up, back to their happy everyday lives.

In conjunction with the rough animatic, we developed three distinct design concepts with two color palettes each. These options were based by the existing website and logo aesthetics. Ultimately, the client selected design concept B2.

We observed a recurring web-like motif in the client’s existing visuals. Recognizing its symbolic association with the safety net provided by RPI, we incorporated this motif as a flowing animation into the background of our movie. This decision proved effective, expanding the visual language and creating a cohesive connection between the hand-drawn illustrations with the geometric elements such as the icons and bubbles.

Design of diverse heads

Part of a more refined design was a lineup of heads representing the extremely diverse demographic of BC, Canada.

The client and Trevor Jansen of Staggering Media quickly endorsed these conceptual elements. The subsequent process of finalizing the video was seamless and gratifying!
