It’s Christmas season! The streets scented with a vendor’s roasting chestnuts to enjoy, and the home kitchen warm with the delicate, sweet fragrance of freshly baked cookies. If only! – Sometimes food gets in funny places.
When tasked with developing animation from a single source image, we gain an exquisite opportunity: to refine the staging, expand on the gags, and add a little extra flair.
In these specific projects, we were able to significantly raise the comedic stakes:
- The initial ad only showed the chestnut vendor’s goods impacted. We animated the car backing up – a creative choice – so the resultant splatter of chestnut paste is now dramatically aimed at the unfortunate, miserable vendor himself.
- The static print only hinted at the dough’s messy landing on the ceiling. In animation, we could show the inevitable: the dough doesn’t just rest there; it begins to drip, slow and sticky, onto the shocked, upturned face of the baking enthusiast below. Also, we further clarified the original drawing by adding an arm holding a spatula. This instantly signals that this person stands behind a counter and is indeed a baker interrupted mid-creation.
Here’s to visual storytelling and the power of animation!
